The Night Belongs to HUGHES

"An Unforgettable Night at The Rock: Luke Hughes Debuts, Jack Hughes Breaks Record, and Devils Clinch Home Ice Advantage"

4/11/23

Lindy Ruff announces shortly after a morning skate that Luke Hughes will be in the lineup tonight!

We were finally going to witness the highly anticipated NHL Debut of former Michigan Wolverine, #4 Overall pick in the 2021 Draft, and younger brother of New Jersey Devils superstar Jack Hughes, Luke Hughes.

As a side plot to Luke playing his first NHL game…

Jack Hughes is currently sitting at 96 points for the 2022-2023 NHL Season; tied at the top of the All Time Single Season list with former Devils legend, Patrik Elias.

What would this night have in store for Devils fans?!?  It was shaping up to be a potentially historic night in franchise history…

You can watch the moments before Luke stepped onto the ice here:

The night officially begins with Luke taking his obligatory solo rookie lap before the rest of the team joins him on the ice.

Watch some of Luke’s warmup action here:

Nearly each time Luke touched the puke, The Rock rained out a chant of “LUUUUKKKKKEEEEEE!!!”.  While he appeared to be slightly jittery at times, he certainly showed he can play at the NHL level.

The Sabres were fighting for their playoff lives and it showed in glimpses throughout the game.  The Devils took the lead in the 1st period and never looked back.  Leading 4-1 late in the 3rd period, Samuelsson scored for Buffalo to cut the Devils’ lead to 4-2.   After a late pull of the goaltender for Buffalo, Tomas Tatar scored his 20th of the season into the empty net with 2:32 remaining, giving the Devils a commanding 5-2 lead.

Up until this point, Jack Hughes had not registered a point on the evening. (in a game where *10* DIFFERENT Devils had a point or more at this juncture)   It appeared that the fans in attendance were going to miss out on witnessing history live.

Needing to win this game to keep their playoff hopes alive; the desperate Buffalo Sabres pull their goaltender AGAIN.

With 1:45 left in the game, IT happened.

Jack Hughes scores on the empty net after an amazing effort by his linemate Jesper Bratt.

You can see the historic moment here:

Devils WIN 6-2

Luke Hughes makes his NHL Debut.

Jack Hughes breaks that “bad boy” record that was owned by Patty for *22* years.

The Devils tie the franchise record with 51 wins…

They secure home ice for the first round of the playoffs…

A magical night at The Rock that no Devils fan will ever forget!
